The Alpe d'Huez Triathlon M is tough but manageable for all triathletes

This tough race is manageable for all triathletes, an ideal challenge for triathlon clubs, and a personal adventure to share with family and friends. The Alpe d’Huez climb, tackled by the triathletes over the course of the afternoon, is at its best in this special accessible format. However what makes this Alpe d’Huez Triathlon M unforgettable is the magic of the Alps in general, from the stunning Lac du Verney to the picturesque Col de Sarenne at 1800m altitude.

1,2 km / 1 Tour

With only 1.2km to tackle, the swim of the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon M is as fast as it is intense. The initial women’s start 15 minutes before the departure of the men, with around 400 women expected, makes this one of the most dynamic and exciting triathlons for female athletes. The mass start for the men (only 2 waves) too confirms the race as one of the most epic in the international triathlon calendar for everyone. The lake is home to an EDF hydroelectric power station, which stops running during the race (swimming is forbidden here the rest of the year). The average water temperature for the last five years is around 17 degrees.

28 km / 1415m +

The cycle route is split into two parts. First of all the triathletes ride a short 15km section along the stunning valley between Lac du Verney and Bourg d’Oisans. Hopefully the triathletes haven’t used all of their energy on this section, because next is the famous Alpe d’Huez climb. The 21 bends are the biggest challenge of the day, winding their way up 13.9km of 8% gradient. Under the July sun the climb can feel even longer and more impressive, living up to its reputation. The public and the members of our organisational team will be there to cheer on and support the triathletes around every bend and precipitous switchback. At the end of the bike section through the streets of Alpe d’Huez the transition zone comes quickly – no rest for the wicked!

6,7 km / 110m +

Sitting at 1800m altitude and taking in 100m of ascent, the running section of the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon M is worth every second. Whatever their level, the triathletes must give their all to get to the end of the 6.7km loop which pushes the athletes on both road and trial and offers in exchange some of the most stunning vistas one can get from the resort. The smiles of pride and accomplishment at the finish line are telling : this race is as demanding as it is exciting!

Kit drop off

The swimming kit must be placed in the ‘Zone 3’ branded bag (provided in your bib pack) during the first transition (T1). This bag must be correctly labelled (with the number stuck to the strap, number provided), and well closed by the triathlete. This should be left it at the triathletes numbered place in the T1 park so that our team can bring it up to Alpe d’Huez during the race. The athlete can then collect it after the race.

Pour les affaires de course à pied, les triathlètes ont 3 options.

There are two options for dropping off the running gear to ensure it is ready in position for athletes during the race. They can be dropped off (using the numbered bag provided in your bib pack) either:

  • directly at the T2 park on the morning of the race between 9 and 12am.
  • at the bib pick-up area on the day before the race.

Your bag of personal items can be given to our team at the entrance of the T1 park in correctly labelled bag (with the number stuck to the strap, number provided). Our team will then bring it up to Alpe d’Huez during the race so the athlete can collect it after the race. Please be aware that plastic bags are not allowed.

Sports massage and physio

The Alpe d’Huez PhysiOstéo team offers a free service to race participants during the opening hours of the bib pick-up area (consult the Official Programme for timings), and at the finishing line of the race. This exceptional service is carried out by around 20 professional physiotherapists and osteopaths, who are all triathlon enthusiasts. They are there to help the athletes recover well from the race, but equally to welcome them beforehand to get in race-ready condition.
