Start men Alpe d'Huez Triathlon

The Alpe d’Huez Triathlon swim has something magical about it. In this brand new swimming clip, we show you why the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon swim is just as epic as the ascent of the 21 mythical bends.

This is the essence of this Triathlon: an authentic race, where the journey begins from the first few yards and ends only after the finish line has been crossed. But in concrete terms, why is the swimming part so special at Alpe d’Huez?

  • Swimming in Lake Verney is a privilege! Outside of Triathlon events, it is absolutely forbidden to swim in the waters of this artificial reservoir. Indeed, Lac du Verney is home to the most powerful hydroelectric power plant in France, the Grand’maison power plant. EDF therefore switches off its electricity production especially for the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon events.
  • Water quality…crystal clear depths! In the heart of the Alps and the Oisans Valley, the translucent waters of Lake Verney are as clear as they are fresh (despite a temperature record in 2019 of 20 degrees!).
  • The mass start of the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon swim: a MUST-do. The event respects its history and the origins of the discipline by offering a mass start to participants (although women have an exclusive start). No staggered start in Alpe d’Huez. Knowing how to position yourself, where you are in the pack and how to orient yourself correctly is one of the qualities of a good triathlete!
  • A magnificent landscape as a backdrop. At the bottom of Vaujany, in the middle of an imposing amphitheatre of mountains, the start of the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon is impressive…come and see for yourself!
