The 3 Overstim.s tips:

The strategy

Nutrition during a race is all about strategy. Prepare a plan depending on what you need, your experience and your goals, so that nothing is left to chance during the race, and your body gets the fuel it needs at the right.

The hydration

Hydration is a key factor in your performance in such a long event where it is often very hot. Remember to drink small amounts on a regular basis, and to choose drinks that will compensate the loss of mineral salts.

Take your time

If you need to, stop at the aid stations. It’s better to spend a minute to eat properly than to eat badly and miss the opportunity to recover your energy. In addition, the volunteers will be there to give you a boost!

Rolling start procedure…
Key points to remember:

15 minutes before the start, take your place in the start lock. You have free access to the lock, depending on your estimated swimming level. 3 levels are indicated (easy-intermediate-difficult).

Your race doesn't start until you cross the timing mat at the water's edge. There's no need to rush!

On the course, you must leave ALL the buoys to your right.

You exit the water and enter the transition park via the start lock.

IMPORTANT: > the organisers, in collaboration with the rescue teams, take the right to remove a participant if they consider that he/she is in difficulty. > the cut-off times have been calculated on the basis of the departure of the last participant, who will in no way be prejudiced by the procedure..

IMPORTANT :

  • Your personal items bag is to be dropped off in the tent dedicated to this purpose. You will get it back in Alpe d’Huez after the race.

  • During the transition, please leave all your swimming gear (wetsuit, swim cap, goggles) in your swim transition bag. You will get it back in Alpe d’Huez after the race.

T1 Lac du Verney :

The 3 swimming tips by EDF

Water temperature

the temperature of the Lac du Verney is usually between 15 and 18 degrees. If you are afraid of the cold, don’t hesitate to use heating oil, but also a second cap (under the official cap). Get the bloody pumping and warm up before you get in the water.

Take the most of the procedure

Be realistic. If swimming is not your favourite discipline, take advantage of the rolling start and position yourself in the ‘easy’ lock to avoid the pressure of more experienced swimmers.

Warm-up zone

Make the most of it! To help you get used to the water temperature as much as possible and get your body moving, the warm-up zone is easily accessible, directly from the transition park.

THE BIKE

Safety & rules:

Road closed in both directions between Allemond and the Lac du Verney start area from 9:00 am to 11:15 am.

The Col d’Ornon road will be closed to uphill traffic (opposite direction to the race) from 11:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Drafting (riding in the slipstream of another competitor on a bike) is not allowed on the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon events. Each triathlete must be at least 12 meters behind the competitor in front of them. The Watchers will be strict on this, and will intervene promptly if this rule is not respected.

Participants MUST respect the natural environment, both during the race and in the transition parks. Clean-up zones are clearly marked at the aid stations, where participants can drop their waste.

Any athlete caught throwing waste out of these zone will be disqualified by the Watchers if they do not pick up their rubbish when asked.

All external assistance is forbidden during the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon events. Only volunteers and the organisation are allowed to provide participants with food and drink.

Furthermore, supporters are not allowed to follow an athlete with their vehicle: the athlete risks immediate exclusion from the race.

The 21 bends in video!

The 3 bike tips by Alpe d'Huez

Safety

is the absolute priority on the bike. Do not take any unnecessary risks that could endanger your life or the lives of others. Stay to the right, never cross the center line and stay focused.

Effort management

the ascent of the 21 bends of Alpe d’Huez requires patience and control. To give yourself the best chance of success to climb the 21 bends and run well, conserve your energy! Always bare in mind this objective: arrive with strength in Bourg d’Oisans. Believe us, the Alpe d’Huez climb is long enough to show off your skills!

Supporters

remember that you are participating in a mountain event. The roads are difficult to access and the set up of the race is difficult. Encourage your supporters to follow your journey online. Be respectful of other participants to maintain the quality of the race for everyone… and avoid direct disqualification if a referee catches you.

The run and transition 2

IMPORTANT:

  • The aid station at the Bergerie can be accessed in both directions.
  • You’ll receive a scrunchie at each lap
  • Although the route has a small section of trail, it is mostly on tarmac and does not require the use of trail shoes.
  • After the race, participants will be able to pick up their bikes in T2 from 6.45pm (NO PICK UP BEFORE 6:45)
  • Join us on the finish line at the end of the day to cheer the last participants (about 9.30pm) and watch the video highlight of the day

Running loop (3 laps):

The 3 running tips by Inverse

Mental strength

whatever the category, pro or amateur, the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon is the moment of truth. It is the moment to show your your mental strength. Stay positive, even in the worst moments, and don’t hesitate to talk to the volunteers to boost your motivation (they’re good at this).

The official recon

Don’t miss this opportunity to check out the new running route. Meet at the Overstim.s stand at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday for the official start of the recon. The Overstim.s team and organisation will show you around the loop at a jogging pace.

Altitude

if you have the chance, plan a few training sessions at altitude before the race, in order to acclimatize your body. Running on race day will be much more comfortable.

Marshals and penalties

The Alpe d’Huez Triathlon is an independent event and is not affiliated with the French Triathlon Federation. The refereeing is done by a specific team within the organization: the “Watchers”.

Yellow card (warning)

  • Incorrect transition
  • Incorrectly positioned bib

The triathlete either corrects their behviour or gets a red card.

Black card (penalty)

  • Drafting
  • Light safety non-compliance
  • …

The triathlete continues their race once they’ve received the penalty, and makes their “stop&go” stop of 5 min in the penalty box before starting the run.

Red card (disqualification)

  • Hard safety non-compliance
  • Warning without correcting behaviour
  • Disrespect of the volunteer crew
  • Throwing rubbish out of the waste zone
  • External help (or supporters following with vehicle)
  • Unsporting conduct

The triathlete stops or joins the next transition, after having given his/her number to the Watcher.

PAY ATTENTION

The Watchers are getting into the action! Watchers on bikes will be in the race alongside the triathletes, for a close-up exchange and monitoring as close as possible the competition.

The Penalty Box is a tent located at the exit of transition 2 in the bike park. It is up to the triathlete to present themselves at the penalty box to make their “stop & go”.
